The seminar presents a synthetic analytical model for the sociology of intellectuals, which incorporates and modifies some of the main theoretical insights of Pierre Bourdieu and Randall Collins.

After an exploration of the concepts of field, capital, habitus and self-concept, I will address briefly three substantive topics: the relationship between teacher and pupil, the relationship between schools of thought and disciplines, and the use of theoretical frameworks as scientific instruments, exemplifying the various steps through episodes taken from my work on the intellectual biography of Robert Bellah.

Matteo Bortolini is researcher in general sociology at Fisppa department. He is co-editor of Sociological for the period 2013-2015 and has published on Theory & Societythe American SociologistEuropean Journal of Social TheoryRassegna Italiana di Sociologia e Studi Culturali.
