Rivers and City: an ambivalent relationship

Abstract

Research aims to develop new meanings, practices, and policies in the urban stretches of Italian rivers. It is anticipated that, once the instrumental functions of urban rivers decline, they will be transformed into recreational or gentrified places with ambivalent socioenvironmental effects and three aspects should be analysed: sociospatial formations, power games, and redevelopment projects. The research methods are based on community studies and eco-volunteer narratives and the research, starting with the cities in the Po basin, will expand in the coming years to central and southern Italian towns.
